Default Multi_purpose compost query

Why is it when I use multi-purpose compost that sometimes the top of it starts to turn green, irrespective if is a plant in the greenhouse or tub outside?

Can anyone explain this - am I doing something wrong?

Water, if light falls on it and it is stagnant will provide a good host to algae etc. If our compost does the same we water less and apply a thin covering of sifted compost on top.

Yes it's naturally - all I do is get a dipper and loosen or scratch the surface. This allows air to the compost and the problem is solved. You may have to do this a few times depending on how long your plants stay in the pots.

I had this problem with cucumber seed, one of the seeds had trouble popping through - so I gently scratched the surface and out popped the cucumber!
