Hi everyone!!!
How big is your plot? This is our second year of growing and we didn't get much for our plot last year - I'm guessing at about 12m by 5m - will measure later. I thought this was quite big but we hardly seemed to harvest anything. I think we didn't use the space wisely and we're still trying out different crops to see what works well here. This year we're determined to try harder and we're sneaking extra crops in any spaces - a cheeky cucumber or two between rows of peas, sneaky radish on the growing potato mounds, and I'm hoping to ramble french beans up the Jerusalem artichokes. I'd love to be mostly self sufficient vege wise!! (far from it now!!) Any other tips for ways to sneak extras in? Or hardy winter crops? My Patch was empty all winter. |

We have quite a few beds - I think in raised beds you can plant closer. We get loads of vegs and another great thing is that raised beds are so much easier - we hardely do any weeding. You can grow potatoes in larger tubs, a friend of mine bought these large garden tubs and filled them with soil and planted potatoes. You could buy call plants latter in the year and plant these to give you something to eat through the winter.

I have 2 plots that is 0.5M x 5M on 0.5M low walls.
On the each plot, I can place 2 plants in a row. So I usually put the vining/pole type vegetables on the one closer to the wall (such as yard long bean, pole green bean, cucumbers etc) and a bush type on the other (such as eggplant, sweet or hot peppers). However, on every 6 or 7th plant row, I left the soil empty. When the plant are about 0.5M in heights, I planted some "groundcover" - (such as water melon, cantaloupe, melon, yam, etc) on the empty soil. Watermelon usually vines around the the plants will end up growing on my concretes. This way, I always have something to harvest during different seasons. I also try to plant something that I can get all year long (at least 9 months in a year) like garlic chives, yam leaves and yam, peppers, etc. I also plant vegetables under my fruit trees. On the front yard, I have galangal (gingers),strawberry, and lemon grass and several onions here & there, which serve as decorative plants and vege/fruit in the mist of other flowers. |
