Hello Everyone

Well I've got 3 x F1 Saturn cuccumber plant in a grow bag. To this day I've harvested 6 x 10" to 11" cues (yummy and very nice).

Though some days the plants look like they are dying and other days they look good. I think this is mainly becasue the leaves collapse! Often though, come the evening when they are not in direct sunlight they perk up, which i expect is normal. I think that in direct light once they have had enough sun the plants collapse their leaves to reduce the surface area to avoid problems.

I have 4 x small seed pots straticigically plant in the grow bag and I water these to avoid rotting the cuccumber stem. I normally water 1 litre per day.

However I've noticed that whilst I'm getting some nice cues, there a immature cues which are left on the plants which are truning yellow and rotting!

See pics of healthy cues (ready to harvest about 10" long), and a pic of a yellow immature cue. I've cut about 10 of this yellow ones off.

So the question is does anyone have an idea as to what is going on?

Am I under watering?

Please help!!

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards to all

Paul

I'm no expert (a beginner when it comes to cue's really) but have done a bit of reading this year. My plants have produced around half a dozen good cucumbers so far this year, with a load more which are currently growing nicely.

However have lost one or two as per your picture above. I'm watering mine twice daily, and think its probably just nature? As long as your plant is still producing good cucumbers I wouldnt worry too much.

The leaves will drop and wilt if its particularly hot but when I water my plants (directly at base of plant) they pick up. Just make sure you dont let them dry out too much as I think if you use a peat based compost when it gets too dry, it struggles then to retain moisture when watered? But someone more knowledgable may come along soon anyway!

The plants appear to abort any surplus fruits. As welshboa says just nip them off. Re flagging of the plants, if they are in a greenhouse is it possible to apply some "Coolglass" to protect from the sun's rays?

Yes, every plants will produce some cucumber that haven't been fertilized - just nip them off and other will grow on the plants. Courgettes have the same problem.
