Default Onion tree?

I have been told by some of my family members that my Grandad had an Onion tree, he died when I was very young and I can't say I remember him but I know he was a keen gardener. I am intrigued by this Onion tree but noone can tell me what it was other than describing it as somewhat shrublike with onions? growing from the branches, that is I'm affraid about all I know. Can anyone here help identify this mysterious plant please.
Thanks,
Jamie.

i dont know how common these things are or how easy they are to get hold of, but maybe this is what he grew.

Hi, you can buy tree onion bulbs but unfortunately they are out of stock at the moment. Beans And Herbs sell the bulbs - here's a link to their site.

Thanks you two, I did wonder whether I was having my leg pulled at first. I definately want to follow in his footsteps with these as I love weird and wonderful things. Apparently his "tree" was quite some size and quite old.

O.M.G.

Yes, I bet you thought you were having your leg pulled, I still can't believe it even after seeing the google pics.

Weird, wonderful, amazing. I just gotta get myself one of those.

Talking of which, I'm still looking for the elusive spaghetti tree to go with my egg plant and cheese plant. . .

Well, just ordered my walking onion tree from a well known auction site. Proceeds go to charity as well, so couldn't be better!

It seems to be recovering now after its ordeal going through the postal service, it's not much to look at at the moment (looks like a stunted normal onion) but I am looking forward to watching the progress.
