We have grow garlic for the last 2 years (we are this year as well) the last 2 years our garlic got very bad rust so we had to pull them up in May. This year it's still growing so we are leaving it still.
The leaves need to be 1/2 – 2/3 brown, when you start harvesting. You normally wait until July before they are pulled.

I planted my garlic in spring, early April I think. They all sprouted but only about half have survived since the cats took to digging up the bed. I found some spare bulbs I the garage this morning and it said to plant by end June, so I've stuck them in the spaces in the bed and some in a large container. When are these likely to be ready?

I planted garlic in November and we had an extremely cold winter. The leaves have completely died down now, so I dug some up. The results are small bulbs more like onions than garlic in appearance, they are not split into cloves. However they are very tasty. Still waiting to harvest the March planted garlic, they are still green and healthy looking.

Ours were like that as well 'GillB' but like you said they are still tasty
Someone told me if they don't get individual cloves it's because they didn't get a frost on them - after they were planted. I have no idea if that is true or not. ![]()

when the leaves are 1/3 browm check the bulbs to be should they are ready or in proper size then when the leaves are 1/2 and 2/3 then you can begin to harvest them.
