Question pumpkins

hi can anyone tell me how to prepare the ground to grow pumpkins in. some of my books tell me to dig a hole 18inches deep then fill in with fertiliser and top soil, to create a mound. is this the right way or can i use a depth of 12 inches, then fill with compost and top soil to create mound.

We would use either of the methods you list. So long as there's some good nutrition because squash are greedy plants. Regular feeding is a good idea, especially high potash tomato feed if you want to encourage lots of handy size fruit.

You can also add manure around the plants though it has to be old manure.

have now put them out in the ground as they were starting to produce some rather large flowers- about 2-3 per plant. i have also put some slug pellets and ant powder around them as i know there are both these pests at the side of the house. hope they survive. will try to post some photos as they continue to grow

Full sun and soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.8 are the needs for growing pumpkins. Pumpkins need light, very rich soil that drains well.

Don't sow too late like me or you'll end up with no pumpkins like me. Guess i left them in the plant pots too long!
