Tonight, 17th January is the old Twelfth Night and traditionally the night for wassailing ceremonies where the best or the oldest tree in the orchard is selected and toast soaked in cider is placed on the tree and cider poured around the base of it. Belief is that without the wassail ceremony there will be no harvest.
There are quite a few wassailing events. Tonight there is wassailing in the orchard of the Butchers Arms Pub, Carhampton, West Somerset beginning at 7.30pm. On Saturday 19th there is a big wassailing event at Landsend Farm, Mudgley, Wedmore, Somerset beginning at 7.30pm with live music, mulled cider, apple cake, bread and cheese. Admission £10 - all in. On Sunday 20th Garden Organic Ryton, Coventry hold a wassail ceremony at 12pm - 2.30pm. Admission - Adults £6, Children (5-16) £3.
