hi jimmy, the last 2 years have been the worst i've seen in 14 years of living in scotland i guess you chose the wrong time to start lots of rain, snow and frost is never a good thing.

where abouts in scotland do you live/stay/bide?

Hi Jimmy, and welcome to a great gardening site. I think all gareners go through good and bad years and sometimes we get good and bad years at the same time. Last year my melons were terrible but the rest was fantastic, so don't get discouraged.
