Hi,

I have never grown anything before at all but my wife, kids and I fancied a go at it. I made a raised bed (2m x 1m) and filled it with compost.

We've planted some carrots (seeds), spring onions (seeds) and onions (little bulby type things) by following the instructions.

Basically we've got no real idea what we're doing, how long it will be before anything happens and what we should be doing (e.g. watering etc).

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Also - we've got a spot at the end of our garden which is in full shade and don't know if anything will grow there?

Thanks.

Hello,
Your Carrots should show in about 3 weeks, your Onion Sets will be quicker, mine were up in a week, how deep did you sow the seeds and bulbs.
You say you filled the raised bed with compost, how deep is it and did you dig it into the soil (mix them). Water them lightly every few days if weather is warm/hot and dry. What is your location - North/South ? Weather wise.

Regards Hammer

Hiya, one thing to note is don't be put off if your crops are small this year, because beds take time to mature. How big is your shady spot? Maybe you could use that to house the compost heap? Or maybe there is light higher up in that area and you could use this part to site some peas that will reach for the light? Have a look at this page for some ideas Grow Vegetables in the Shade - Ten Vegetables You Can Grow Without Full Sun experiment, you never know

Thanks everyone - I look forwards to seeing something grow (hopefullly).

Hammer - the bed is about 6" above ground level - mixed in a little with the earth that was already there but not too much (is that good or bad??).

Also can anyone tell me how much I should be watering - is it loads or little?

Many thanks.
