Default Hellooooo

Hi

My name is Paula,

I am hoping to grow my own veg and salad asap after noticing the shocking prices it is costing me to buy them.

It also coincides with a boredom phase of my life, kids growing up, more time on my hands now etc.

We dont have a huge garden so my husband is building me a raised bed to start with, approx 1.8 x 0.6 0r 1.2 x 1.2 (yet to be decided)

Any advice on what grows best etc and what soil/compost/fertiliser ratio to use would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Paula

Hi Paula, and welcome . I can't give you much advice on the soil for your raised bed, since I don't have any, but for what to plant I think you'd be fine with toms, beans, peppers, onions, some bush type squash and cucs. I'm not sure if it's a bit late for lettice, peas, cabbage and the like since they are crops that like cool weather. Maybe someone closer to your area can give you adive on that. Glad to have you here.

Hi Paula,

I have built several raised flower and vegatable beds in my garden recently.

I've startedthe bottom with a decent compost (use your own or a good make that is peat free). Then I've mixed in some quality top soil in with compost for the top 1/4 and added some fish blood and bone and mixed it together ready for the vegatable planting.

2 of the raised vegatable beds I've made a top wooden frame with perspex covering so that I can keep them covered if I've recently planted veg from the green house. Just an extra bit of added protection.

Once you've done the soil in the raised beds check the PH level to ensure it's around 6.

Welcome to the forum.

Hi Paula, Welcome to the Forum.
Just to add to Huskers reply i plant Lettuce and Cabbage at this time of year - no problem, it,s not too late at all, i plant seedlings though, you can get them cheaply at any Garden Center. I will also sow peas next week, just push into the ground - could,nt be easier. Of course i,m maybe 100 odd miles further south than you, south-east Ireland but i,m sure you will be fine.
What soil etc is going into your raised bed.
Regards Hammer.
