Happy to be a new member
I live in the city have a small yard but making the most of the space I have. I currently have a 12X24 vegetable garden. My dad recently owned the property and for 20 years nothing has been grown .I was challenged by him if you can get a garden to grow in that back yard with a walnut tree I’ll pay for half the plants. I turned the ground early March. I hit rock in a 2ft patch of the plot I assigned. I got a load of compost from my local supplier and mixed it in. so far every plant I planted is doing great (Bell Pepper/ Broccoli/squash/cucummbers/Stipee/big boys/ and 1 cherry.I have more than 6hrs of sun exsposure even with the tree on the other side of the garden. I ran out of room so I found a sheet metal v tray container 12ft long 24" deep cleaned it. Drilled holes in the bottom and beveled the corners for run off. I planted Beans and peas in the container last week everything is going good so far. I have also mixed hardwood much in the main garden and continue to keep the plants soil loose each morning. I went out of town for a week and my dog got in the garden and ate the leaves off the broccoli plants. All are around 24" tall now. I hope they will survive. This is the first year at our new home.Last edited by citygardener; 25-05-2011 at 08:46 AM. Reason: update info |

Sounds like you're very committed to your project! Loosening soil every morning! Well done!
I'm new here too and hoping for a productive year after a rubbish one last year. It's our second year in this house and our patch had previously been a weed filled lawn for many years. |
