Smile Solitary Allotment

Hello, new member here.

I have been working my allotment for a year now. When I got it it hadn't been worked for several years, no beds - just grass/weeds, and about 50 rogue potato plants - so it needed quite a lot of tlc. I managed to have a summer without buying any veg whatsoever, so the hard work did pay off!

The only problem with my allotment is that it is very lonely, although very peaceful. I live in the country and the patch is on its own, so there are no neighbours to give tips and chew the cud with. Well my neighbours do chew the cud to some extent as the site is in an old pinfold between two fields of sheep (6 of whom managed to jump the wall in August and made light work of my beans - but that's another story). The site is about 170sqm but as it triangular it has taken some creative planning! There is no water on the site (which I think contributed to the fact that it hadn't been worked for years), but coincidentally my neighbour at home owns the fields with the sheep in, and lets me take the mains water from the sheep troughs (I also have a couple of water butts but they just aren't enough in the middle of the summer). It's a nice arrangement as I give him some veg in return and we are all happy! (Plus I get to snaffle sheep dung to make a "tasty" tea for my veggies).

Apologies for the rambling - just wanted to say hello, I am looking forward to swapping tips and tricks with virtual allotment neighbours here!

Apologies - I've just realised that I've put this in the wrong section, I should have posted it in introductions. Tsk, newbies eh? (I've reported it - sorry!).

Thank you! There's not a lot to do on the plot at the moment, so I have plenty of time to read the forum
