They are aphids Matt. Either squash them with your fingers or spray the plants with soapy water. Just a tiny amount of washing up liquid mixed with plenty of water but not the anti bacterial stuff. Put some marigold plants close by as the aphids are supposed to prefer them.

I recognise the aphids but what on earth is that long ugly thing in the second picture?
