Hi Smeagal, use good old washing up liquid. You need to really dilute it, about one teaspoon of washing up liquid to a few litres of water - but not the anti bacterial stuff. Squash as many black fly between thumb and finger as you can, then spray with the diluted washing up liquid, probably once a week. Hollie had great success using this on her pumpkin plants. ![]()

Hello. I use Neem oil on everything. I have used it for about 3 years. Initially I used it on my orchids but now use it for everything, including powdery mildew. You can still crop up to 12 hours after applying (apparently, I did not try this and left it for a few days). It is safe for pets and non toxic to humans as long as you don't drink it! The greenfly etc do come back so repeat once a week or so. It’s great for roses, and leaves a sheen on the leaves for a few days. I have had great success with this on spider mite and scale on houseplants. Keep it in the fridge as it stays potent longer. Mix two teaspoons in warm water with one squirt of washing-up liquid to emulsify the oil and water. Spray on everything and use it all up as once mixed you need to use within six hours. It has a very strong smell and this helps repel or discourage insects from returning for a few days. I use a stronger solution to spray around pots and fences. Read about it online. It has some amazing properties. I bought mine on ebay.

5 days ago, on another thread, I wrote:

I will continue to use it as a preventative measure and would recommend it to everyone to try. One note though - the Neem oil does solidify at room temperatures and below, hence the need to warm it and use warm water. However, the warm water shouldn't be over 30 degrees C or it will kill the active ingredient in the Neem Oil. Ali. Last edited by Alison_Kristina; 09-06-2011 at 10:49 AM. |

Well, I thought I'd report back.
Two applications of Neem oil has totally got rid of the greenfly, and as a bonus the snails now refuse to touch the lettuce ![]() I was also plagued with very small flies, but some PK 5 LARGE AREA YELLOW STICKY GLUE FLYING INSECT TRAPS | eBay UK (which I cut in half lengthways) works like magic, especially if put low down: ![]() Ali ![]() Last edited by Alison_Kristina; 04-07-2011 at 07:52 PM. |
