Thanks for the link, Malcolm. Very helpful. Those plants are looking very very sorry for themselves!

Hi Smeagal, use good old washing up liquid. You need to really dilute it, about one teaspoon of washing up liquid to a few litres of water - but not the anti bacterial stuff. Squash as many black fly between thumb and finger as you can, then spray with the diluted washing up liquid, probably once a week. Hollie had great success using this on her pumpkin plants.

Hello. I use Neem oil on everything. I have used it for about 3 years. Initially I used it on my orchids but now use it for everything, including powdery mildew. You can still crop up to 12 hours after applying (apparently, I did not try this and left it for a few days). It is safe for pets and non toxic to humans as long as you don't drink it! The greenfly etc do come back so repeat once a week or so. It’s great for roses, and leaves a sheen on the leaves for a few days. I have had great success with this on spider mite and scale on houseplants. Keep it in the fridge as it stays potent longer. Mix two teaspoons in warm water with one squirt of washing-up liquid to emulsify the oil and water. Spray on everything and use it all up as once mixed you need to use within six hours. It has a very strong smell and this helps repel or discourage insects from returning for a few days. I use a stronger solution to spray around pots and fences. Read about it online. It has some amazing properties. I bought mine on ebay.

Neem Insecticide - Neem Oil Insecticide - Does It Work?

Ali.
Well I'm pleased to report back that it does work! As a first application I liberally sprayed it all over my toms, peppers, mangetout, courgettes & herbs - I literally soaked the leaves (including the undfersides) & soil, as well as the outside of the pots and all around - and there has been no negative effects at all, but a very noticeable reduction in aphid & small fly populations.

I will continue to use it as a preventative measure and would recommend it to everyone to try.

One note though - the Neem oil does solidify at room temperatures and below, hence the need to warm it and use warm water. However, the warm water shouldn't be over 30 degrees C or it will kill the active ingredient in the Neem Oil.

Ali.

Sorry, I didn't notice when I clicked to view and then rushed in with the suggestion because I thought it was useful.

Well, I thought I'd report back.

Two applications of Neem oil has totally got rid of the greenfly, and as a bonus the snails now refuse to touch the lettuce

I was also plagued with very small flies, but some PK 5 LARGE AREA YELLOW STICKY GLUE FLYING INSECT TRAPS | eBay UK (which I cut in half lengthways) works like magic, especially if put low down:
