Default Netting for insects

This is my first year of growing veg, we are growing broccoli, carrots, cabbage, lettuce and parsley to see how we get on. I want to get it right and don’t want to lose any veg to butterflies or insects and I need to space my broccoli as soon as I can from the small plastic green house as they are growing quite big. I have found this site harrodhorticultural.com and wondered if anyone had ever ordered their butterfly or insect netting before? I am not sure if this is expensive either. Many thanks. Tash.

I have actually found someone on Ebay who is selling this type of netting, but much cheaper, so I think I shall see if it's suitable first, then get this other netting.

Hi Wales, the site you found is quite expensive so it's best to search through a number of sites for the best price - not forgetting to add the P & P. Some of the supermarkets will sell suitable netting as well as B & Q and Homebase so it's worth including their sites in your search.

thanks for your reply - i went down to Wilkinsons yesterday and they had the same stuff 8 m x 1.5 m for only £2.99, so i have picked up some of that - i have put it over the brocilli and i checked it this morning as it was raining all night and it seems ok at the moment.

I bought some insect netting (enviromesh) from The Organic Garden Catalogue. they do it by the running metre so you can have what ever length is required and different widths. that was 2 years ago and I like it. prices may have gone up and though pricey if it last's as it should (10yrs)then so far so good. it could work out cheaper than fleece. I found the running metre cheaper than pre sized pieces. my only thing with insect netting ( I use mine on carrots only at the moment) is if insects have got in there already the netting keeps out the predators. I used some of the green barrier netting one year around my cabbages and noticed that something like whitefly can get though where wasps couldn't. So apart from carrots I use anti bird netting now. there is a quiet satisfaction to going though the cabbage etc and squishing eggs and caterpillars I find.
