Default The dreaded Clubroot?

I pulled up a few Pak Choi this morning in the new vege patch. I was a bit surprised when I noticed the root growth as the pic below.

Tell me it isn't clubroot in my brand new raised bed with an imported soil bought from the garden/landscaping center.

No, it isn`t clubroot. Check the swellings for tiny, almost pinprick sized, holes. I think it could be Turnip Gall Weevil.

I hope your right! I think the weevil would be easier to cure than clubroot
I did cut one of those roots in half and it looked very uniform right through (no bug tunnels, etc. The colour was consistent too.)

There is still a few more Pak Choi in that row. I plan on leaving them a bit longer to see what happens the last ones had only stopped growing, they hadn't begun dying or changing colour. I noticed something was wrong as one of the plants swollen roots was growing up an inch above ground.

Kiwi, trust me, it is NOT clubroot. If it were, the root would be rotted away, and the plant wouldn`t have grown that big.

Cool! I'm so glad as I wouldn't have wanted clubroot to spoil Christmas!
The remaining plants look quite healthy above ground. I wonder whats going on there. It has been really windy here the last few months. At seedling stage they got blown around quite badly.. could it be they grew roots like that to try and anchor themselves to the garden..?

The most likliest culprit is the turnip gall weevil.

You would need to find an insecticide suitable for use in the soil. Something like Derris dust if you have it available down there.

What will Borax do Potty? I thought it was used to treat Boron deficiency, not as an insecticide.

It MAY work in the treatment of Clubroot, but we are talking about Turnip Gall Weevil.

David, do I just sprinkle the derris dust on the soil pre-planting or would I be best to dig it in? why did the ninnies have it banned? I also wonder how my neighbors cabbages are going. I'll have to ask.

Pottypot, that's a great link to how best treat soil with clubroot.

cheers, Kiwi

Rake it in lightly when planting.
