Question Greenfly

Last summer a couple of successful chilli plants I kept in the conservatory ended up with a lot of green fly, to the point I ended up having to chuck the plants. I also have a lemon verbena plant in the conservatory but I cut that right back and give the entire room a real spring clean and thought that would be it.....but i just noticed some green fly on the lemon verbena (even after those cold winter months!) Ive since put the plant outside (could I put it in to the compost heap?) my main question is how can I prevent it happening again this summer? I have two Aloe Vera plants and a money tree in the room-but Ive never noticed any greeen fly on these. How can I win a battle againist the buggers?

Why not just crush the aphids between thumb and forefinger?
