Homemade mouse trap?

Just saw a mouse in our basement garage. I'm pretty sure there only a few of them, and they've been there 2 weeks. I was bringing in wood last week, and they must have hopped off the tractor.
At this point, I just want to collect them, and get 'em out unharmed. (My goals may change)

I have heard that you can catch these critters with a 5 gallon bucket. Just make up something as a ladder for a mouse to climb up to the rim of the bucket (I am using hardware cloth), then something to entice the critter to jump into the bucket (I put some grass seed in the bucket). I can check the bucket every day for results.

Aparently mice like fruit, cheese, and from the state of my bird seed store - bird seed! I would put a mixture in to see what they like the best.

Well it's easier just to buy those ready made traps, and they work quite nicely provided you buy the decent ones. Unless you have a huge rat, but even then they don't get too far.
