caterpillar/lavae things in the soil?

Does anyone know what this might be ....

I was turning over the soil preparing for a raised bed, lifted the grass off and turned the soil over underneath it and kept finding short fat caterpillar type things, they were brown with a few pale yellowish stripes running the length of them along the back.

Sorry I couldn't get a picture, my phone battery was flat.
