I don't see anything wrong with letting insects go by your plant provided that they aren't damaging them.

Ants would fall under this category right?

Unless they choose to nest in the roots of a plant, or farm aphids on your beans. lol

A great, simple way to get rid of ants is simply to pour water on the nest. They hate it and quickly leave.
