Smile A New Section On The Forum - Your Opinion Counts!!

One of our members has suggested a new section on the forum devoted to shrubs, perennials and lawns etc. This would be alongside the flower growing section that we already have.

So, the question is..............what do you think???

I don`t see a problem with having a section for shrubs, and trees, come to that. As long as people realise the priority of the site is in the cultivation of edible produce. Perennials would come under the flower section anyway, I would have thought. It`s your site, Lesley, how far do you want to go down the general gardening route?

Well David, the site is called Vegetable Gardens and we are here to help people grow their own fresh, tasty vegetables, fruit and herbs. But, members do have gardens aswell as their veggie plot. However, I could easily change The Flower Pot name and description to cover both flowers and shrubs.

Flowers, yes, they are needed for pollination purposes. Trees and shrubs, fruit grows on trees and shrubs, but LAWNS? Unless they are chamomile.

Knowing nothing about gardening I'd probably expect anything about trees and shrubs to be in the Flower Pot section (I like the cute name!). Not really sure about lawns though - surely there are enough garden forums already covering these areas?

+1 unless the lawn doubles as a path to the veg

Im very new here, but for me this bit in bold is the key point. Most people don't grow veg in isolation, and some like me have had to make the most of limited space by sharing beds between veg, shrubs and annuals. Id enjoy having the freedom to ask about all of it here.

I really enjoy gardening, but I find coming here to ask a question about broccoli and then nipping off to google parthenocissus triscupidata pests a bit inconvenient.
Its a very regular thing for me to have 2 or 3 google search result windows open all the time Im on here.

Clearly long time posters will have a greater say about any potential changes, and obviously they are happy and familiar with the current format, but I dont think it will impact the forum experience of the veg purists too much!
I for one, would advocate for keeping your vegetable growing niche but making a wee bit more room for those other much loved garden favourites.

So, Melinda, which gardening site do you prefer, this one or the other one?

Is there a inter-board war going on then David?!

There are things I like about both boards and there must be quite a bit of membership crossover. The boards have different atmospheres and user experiences imo, which you must know since clearly you frequent both places!

Im all about my plants David, not the drama And yes, my username is the same in both places!

There is no need to get stroppy, I asked you a simple, civilised question. We both use the same forums, I just asked your opinion.

Not being a member on any other gardening forums, I think a flowery/shrubby/tree-y section is a good idea, for the occasional non-veg growing questions.

If the section gets too active then it might be worth splitting it off from the main site (if possible) but if it is only used for the occasional question then I think it'd be a good thing. As has been said, most of us will probably grow our veg in our regular gardens, in amongst the non-veg plants. And anything which helps our knowledge grow (haha) can only be a good thing.

I dont care for you characterising my post as 'stroppy' David; my post was hardly that.

And yours was far from simple or civilised- it gave me quite a start tbh.

At best it was poor form on your part, at worst its slightly creepy.

Im new to both forums (2 weeks on both), you could have said hello or sent a pm any time if you wanted to speak to me.

Ive honestly thought twice about coming back today because it was such an off-key thing to happen.

Sorry about this Lesley,

because otherwise you've all made me very welcome here.

Right now, - I do not want petty arguments spilling out onto the forum.

This is a friendly forum and all our members are important to us so I don't even want this stupid war of words continuing via PM.

There are far more important things happening in the world so please forget about it.

Lesley... I think a new section would be great, that way people who have specific queries have a clear place to post new threads.

This site is focused on vegetable growing (which is excellent), I'm sure that lots of people grow plants, flowers and trees as well as vegetables and probably need some advice from time to time, so I think it would be a welcome addition!
