Default Asparagus beginner needs advice

Hi All,

I'm new to this excellent forum

I've decided to grow asparagus in my veg. plot at home in Hampshire and have prepared a 8" deep trench with a mixture of compost and sand. I planted 4 crowns of Connovers Colossal in early March and covered with about 2 inches of soil and wondered when I should expect to see some spears appear? I was getting concerned that I had planted the crowns out too early and they may have been damaged by frost?

Thanks for any advice and reassurance you can offer

Michael

Thanks for taking time to reply Nightowl and for the useful RHS link !

Good luck with your "grass" growing and it'd be great to hear how it's going.

Best wishes,
Michael

Asparagus is not an instant gratification crop. It takes three years to start getting spears.. The fern-like growth is rather attractive, but this forms long after the spear harvest. No harvest should take place until the third year.

Asparagus now growing well - I have 5 spears 4 from 4 crowns and am letting these grow into ferns to get energy into the plant for next year.

Looking good!

I put some sharp sand mixed in compost into my trench. By autums I'l have it levelled out before cutting back the fern. Will add some photos soon
