Hi All,
I'm new to this excellent forum I've decided to grow asparagus in my veg. plot at home in Hampshire and have prepared a 8" deep trench with a mixture of compost and sand. I planted 4 crowns of Connovers Colossal in early March and covered with about 2 inches of soil and wondered when I should expect to see some spears appear? I was getting concerned that I had planted the crowns out too early and they may have been damaged by frost? Thanks for any advice and reassurance you can offer Michael |

Asparagus is not an instant gratification crop. It takes three years to start getting spears.. The fern-like growth is rather attractive, but this forms long after the spear harvest. No harvest should take place until the third year.

Asparagus now growing well - I have 5 spears 4 from 4 crowns and am letting these grow into ferns to get energy into the plant for next year.
Looking good! I put some sharp sand mixed in compost into my trench. By autums I'l have it levelled out before cutting back the fern. Will add some photos soon Michael |
