Default Carrots

Hooray
I have been searching everyday for signs of my carrots and nothing doing.
At last after a nice drop of rain overnight and today has shown a lot of little carrot leaves pushing through.
It has given me heart and I'm all ready now to sow another row or two !!
Am I the only one who seems to have trouble getting a crop ?

It's funny but my grandson sowed his carrots in a container at the same time as I sowed mine in the ground and his have been showing for ages - all he used was multi-purpose compost.
Try again Sue

I AM DETERMINED to try again and again much to the amusement of the other old boys around here so will be outside at the weekend carrot seeds at the ready and hope that when I come back from my hols my others won't have disappeared lol

Sprouting Carrots has given me trouble in the past, i found i was planting them a little deeper than they liked. Now when i plant them i start them 1/8"-1/4" deep with as little water as possible so the root will grow rapidly downword insearch of water. I think i get slightly bigger and straighter carrots now

I think you may have hit the nail on the head Livebait regarding the depth of sowing - thanks !

Carrots march to their own drummer. They may not germinate if the soil is too warm, above 80F. I have had them germinate in 7 days and in other cases 21 days.

Today (15 May 2008) I planted another bed of carrots, under perfect conditions, and will post when they germinate. The weather is unseasonably cold in my area, so the carrots should thrive.

Default carrots won't germinate

I've tried carrots in trays, outdoor seed bed, compost. Nothing works. Now have a couple of packets left so for last attempt what do you suggest?

don't be defeated. carrots are not as moody as parsnips.

try again. they WILL come up.
Do you think you might have duff seed?

I just bung 'em in in straight lines in the ground, they come up like little soldiers, the slugs eat them & I resow. c'est la vie.

container grown ones are great ,we like Parmex. ghastly name but fab carrotts. been eating mine from tubs in green house for several weeks now. well worth the 1/2 hr it took in feb to set em up!

Have faith in your self!

http://ficosae.notlong.com 28 May 2008 Carrots germinarted in 12 Days.

These carrot seeds, four varieties, were planted on the 15 of May. Almost all have germinated. They were planted at the same depth on toilet paper laid in the rows and lightly covered with fine compost. I watered lightly, daily. The temperatures were cool at night and full sun during the day, when the sun was present.

Last night 27/28 May there was frost in many areas around Toronto. Our temperature went to 3C, but I see no frost damage, and the sun is brightly shining this morning. We will have no further frost until the Fall season. It has been a most cool Spring.

Hello Everyone, newbie here not to veggie gardening though. I have one crop of carrots on their way but I sowed some more yesterday and we had a humdinger of an electric storm last night and torrential rain so am hoping that it has not harmed the seed. The beds look ok so fingers crossed.

Moyra, are you in the south east by any chance? We had a very heavy storm last night that knocked out our electricity for about an hour.

There was no damage to my plants thankfully.

Yes Greenfingers only the Thames divides us. Lol. I am just a couple of miles inland from the Thames Estuary in south-east Essex. Quite a storm wasn't it. Nicer morning this morning if only it would last but not for long by the sound of it.

Hi Primrose

I just sived the ground outside and raked it smooth. I put several lined dips in the soil, threw a load of seeds in and put compost over the top. Tapped the ground down and watered the lot. At the moment, I have loads of carrot seedlings poking through. I didn't bother with using the greenhouse.

The first thing I looked at on Weds when I got back from my hols was the carrots - yes there does seem to be something showing but the weather has been terrible here so am not hoping for miracles. Hopefully a few days of sun and heat may get them going. I'm so determined to get at least a handful !!! and will keep sowing.

Cool

Hi primrose. Unfortunately they do need the heat, something we have lacked lately. The last few days of hot weather have really started my carrots off really well over the last wek. They have grown an inch and some more. leavethem and don't give up.

Came home from work the other day and partner said he had strung my b.beans as they took a beating in the wind. How kind I said only to find on checking he had also walked over my row of carrots which were just beginning to show.
Am I jinxed ?
