Default Spuds

I have had my Dieree spuds chitting for about 3 weeks now and nothing!!!!!!!!! They are in my GH.

I know I ordered them late, it took me that long to find somewhere here that sold them! Strange lot, they supply the world with flowers and veggies and I cant get the selection of veg seed let alone anything else that you lucky things in the UK can get!

So are they ever going to sprout or should I just chuck some in the ground and hope for the best, once this rain has passed that is!

Many thanks Sandra

You can plant the tubers unchitted and really as Desiree are a maincrop potato, needing about 20 weeks to grow fully, then maybe you would be better planting them now. (I know you shouldn't do this but if you want them to start sprouting put them somewhere dark for a few days!)

I planted charlottes that were chitted - in fact they had sprouted quite a lot....they are growing just fine and have about 4 weeks left to go.

I planted some desiree, and some other varieties I can't remember (!! Must make the effort to label!!!) unchitted, as soon as they arrive I planted them, and they are also growing fine. They have been in about 3 - 4 weeks and the shoots are coming through.

So if I were you I would plant them now. To be honest, I cannot see the difference in chitting and not chitting. I read somewhere that it really doesn't make a lot of difference.

Many thanks for the replies .

Right then as soon as this blasted rain stops I`m out planting! How long can I expect to wait to see shoots?

Not that it really matters! I have just had some tomato seedling come up planted by one of my sons , when the other two kids toms are up hardened off and in the garden, a foot or so high! Amazing what bad greenhouse house keeping does for you! Also it seems as soon as i have given up on a seed of some description and either sown a new batch or planted directly in the soil, up the originals pop. Am now seriously getting stuck for space just cant seem to throw any away! Out with the flowers! ha ha ha ha ha ha

Cheers all, Sandra

The ones I planted without chitting have taken about 3 - 4 weeks to show their faces....I am growing in buckets and sacks though, so they might be different in the ground.
