Default New to this / what can i grow

Hi All

Well i am new to all this! Because ofthe cost of living I thought I would have a go at growing my own veggies.

Well i have started with growing toms. also beetroot, i love fresh beetroot

runner beens, they are in a pot and also against my fence.

Carrotts..well what can i say about them..I think i went a bit mad when doing the seeds..i have hundreds of them butthey seem very small at the moment. How long does it take for them to grow?

i am also growing lettuce, but yet again went made wih the seeds but have not been able to seperate them all as i have run out of garden and pots.

i also growing chillies in another garden pot.

I have a trough like built filled with soil. it is about 8 foot by 2 foot..taken up by the carrotts, th rest is pots.

what i would like to know is what can i start growing ready for winter.

please note I dont have mainy window cills to start seeds off.

advise would be much appreciated.

thanks

Lorraine

Hi Lorraine and welcome!!

It certainly sounds as if you have a really great vegetable garden on the go! Carrots do take ages to grow fully, about 3 months (ish), but if the carrot trough is jam packed with carrots then they will not grow larger. The carrots might need thinning out to give the remaining carrots room to grow. Eat the ones you thin out as baby carrots.

With veg to grow over the winter I would suggest buying plants this year as I think time might be a bit short to start growing from seeds this year. You can also grow over winter onions which will be ready to eat about May / June and now is the time to buy seed potatoes for new potatoes which will be ready to eat in October but can be kept in the container they are grown in until Christmas.

Marshalls sell winter vegetable plants although the quantity might be too large. They also sell seed potatoes and over winter onion sets. Radar and Electra are good varieties of onion for this time of the year.

Marshalls Seeds - Vegetable Seed, Onion Sets, Seed Potatoes, Fruit Trees, Vegetable Plants.

One of our members, Keith, has a nursery in Cornwall selling vegetable plants all year round.

Vegetable plants available mail order from vegetableplantsdirect over 500 varieties available from heritage to modern F1 varieties

I hope that helps a little bit!!

Your just starting out right now Pothead, if you maintain your enthusiasm and keep asking those who know and learn from your own mistakes, you'll get there.

Thanks for your replies. Today we had fresh carrotts from the garden. very small andodd shapes but they were lovely.

I will have a look on thoselinks you have given me.

Whilst wartering the veggies it looks like i am going to have a lot of runner beans. Looking forward to them.
