Hi Garfiun, where are you growing the vegetables? Are you digging up the garden, using raised beds or growing the vegetables in containers?

Containers need to be at least 25cms or 10 inches in diameter and about 12 inches deep. Plastic containers are better than terracotta pots as the compost doesn't dry out as fast. It's important to have drainage holes in the bottom of the pots and most plastic pots don't have them so you need to make a pilot hole and then drill very carefully because the pots can crack! Use a good multi-compost to fill the containers such as John Innes No.3. Bags of compost are usually on offer at the garden centres around April / May. Choose a sunny spot for the containers and water the vegetables well. I feed the plants once a week with an organic liquid seaweed feed.

There is still time to grow pak choi, salad leaves and probably spring onions. Next year you will be able to grow loads - courgettes, dwarf french beans, climbing french beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, peas, carrots, potatoes (in a bucket!), broad beans, broccoli and lots more.

You don't need new pots - try and recycle containers that you think are about the right size. Big tin cans would be okay and your local pizza take away might have huge containers that tinned tomatoes were in. The local chippy might have oil drums.

You can buy mushroom growing kits that contain everything you need to grow mushrooms. They are usually grown somewhere dark like in the airing cupboard. Here's a link.

You can also buy the mushroom spores which is much cheaper. Here's a link.
