How much did they pay you to say that? ;-)

If it was enough to cover delivery charges to me, then it was a fair bit !
I was really impressed until I saw how much extra I'd be charged.

I usually get my seeds from the Organic Gardening Catalogue and they only charge £1.70 for postage (free if you spend over £27) and there are a few potato quantity options which aren't too bad. However, all are out of stock now. I think I will find someone else where I live to share a quantity with - I'm not too fussy which ones I get.

Default Seed potatoes

I used to get mine from the Organic Gardening Catalogue (and still do get most of my seeds from them). A few years ago I went to a Potato Day at Garden Organic, Ryton and was able to buy a wider variety of potatoes in much smaller quantities (to try them - growing conditions vary so much from garden to garden don't they?) I really enjoyed the experience and learned a lot.

The following year I googled "potato day" and found one in Somerset and got my seed potatoes there - all certified. I couldn't find one in Dorset, so I contacted Pennards (who had supplied for the Somerset event) and they agreed to do one for our Horticultural Society, we have held two now and the next will be in February 2010.

This year I am growing Anya 2E, (waxy), Charlotte 2E (Salad), Sarpo Mira LM (Fluffy), Cosmos 2E (Waxy) , Valor EM (Firm flesh) and Markies M (Floury). We have been eating well from the Charlottes and Cosmos (which aren't as waxy as I'd hoped).

If you haven't visited a Potato Day, I'd really encourage you to give it a try, it is a very useful, hands-on way to learn about, select and try different varieties.

Im with you on that one, it's expensive to ship. They should just make it free and write it off on their taxes as an expense.

Default Potatoes from Holland ???

I live in Italy and have had a great correspondence with the seed potato folks in Scotland as recommended. BUT I cannot import them from any UK supplier. ( shipper will not accept - containing earth and are perishable goods!!)
So I know that the few gardening shops in Italy import from holland but in fairly big quantities and very few varieties.

So my question is does anybody know a Dutch company that sells several varieties and in small quantities - If I can order like that to try out and see which ones work well then following seasons I can reduce the variety and increase the quantities.
Thanks
Nick from Varallo in Northern Italy

I got seed potatoes from the Scottish folks in the first post (before I had read the post ).
I wanted to get some 'unusual' spuds to grow - sorts I can't find in the shops. I've no idea how they'll turn out, but they're chitting away quite happily!

Nick - do you know anyone in the UK? I had the same problem, and got them sent to London, then I collected when I was over, but I would have had them re-posted (not a cheap option) if I couldn't make the trip myself.

I checked on the import restrictions, but didn't see anything prohibitive (might be different for posting than carrying though).

I have bought a bag of 7 Charlotte seed potatoes from Morrisons this year. But I think they only had the one variety. I noticed that B&Q were also doing a small range of smaller quantities.

Varallo: sorry, no information about Dutch companies, but hope you find something to help you soon.

Smile Info

Hi,

I am new to vegetable gardener but found your posts as the thread was entitled seed potatoes.

I work for a family business of organic seed potatoes growers and suppliers in Scotland - we supply the first company mentioned, and potato days and dutch companies along with direct to the public sales. My main reason for joining in was to say that Varallo should get in touch with SKAL who are the dutch equivalent of the soil association and SOPA here and ask them for a list of retail suppliers and those companies who fill small orders. We do it here and are registered with the soil association, so they should be a good place to start.

Hope that helps
