Hiya
Can anyone recommend what I should try to grow over the winter period? I have a 6x4 greenhouse in central Scotland and this is my first year of properly trying to grow my own veg. I used grow bags for my tomatoes and cucumbers but I have large containers and was wondering what I could put in them. Also, can you grow beetroot over the winter? |

Hi, thought I'd reply seeing I'm in Perthshire.
Why don't you try some perpetual spinach, some broad beans, actually they can go outside, but if you've a greenhouse that's well insulated, you have much more choice. I think you can put potatoes in for early harvest just now (outside). I am going to see if I can get more peas and carrots, seeing as the weather's been good recently (in the greenhouse). Not sure about the beetroot, but I don't see why not in the greenhouse. I am growing basil on the window sill. Have fun. Just try things. I'm a relative novice, and the satisfaction of eating your own veggies (much more tasty and FREE!) is wonderful. |

The brassica family, which includes cabbages, cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels sprouts, is the mainstay of the traditional winter garden. Now that the weather is cooler it is a good time to plant them. These guys take a lot of space and time. However you can take advantage of slow-growing brassicas by planting quick crops between them. Lettuces, spring onions and baby carrots can all be sown between brassicas and they will be harvested and gone by the time the brassicas reach full size. Garden centres sell mixed vege punnets designed for this. They also sell punnets of mixed brassicas - an ideal way to avoid a glut of one variety.
Hope this helps |

Hiya,
Apparently (and I am a novice so I may be wrong) now is a good time to plant onions and garlic. We have done this and I, like you, would like to plant a few more things for over winter. Someone told me potatoes would work, but then someone else told me they wouldn't... Anyway, good luck! |

As many have said Broad Beans The Sutton ,Aquadulce and Supersimonia , Overwintering Peas such as Feltham first and Douce Provence. Brassicas such as cauliflowers, Kale, Purple Sprouting etc, Oriental salads and greens, Onions, Garlic, Shallots, Winter Lettuce where you are restricts you to a degree but give it a go

Florence Fennel is another good one, that will withstand the winter (mine are in a cold greenhouse)
I've tried growing beetroot late before but all I got were green tops but no roots, but I may have got the growing medium wrong (I put in loam soil with no added nutrients) so not 100% sure. Good luck |
