Default please advice.

I have got my first bed dug over at the allotment and got some onions and Garlic in.

Any suggestions for what else I could be planting/sowing right now? The options are rather limited hence the question

Hi. Things are pretty limited at this time of year, but I can suggest sowing broad beans & early peas - probably best to protect them with cloches.

You could also give strawberries a try. They are hardy in winter, but Spring frosts can affect them, so again probably best protecting with cloches.

Some good advice from Oasis Gardening there. I wonder if the brassica family (broccoli, cauli, brussel sprouts, Bok choi, etc) would grow in your climate over winter. Maybe if you bought punnet seedlings already well established. Swiss chard, carrots, leeks, lettuce, beetroot? maybe a bit late to get carrots in.. How cold does it get where you are? how much sun does your garden get?
your local gardening store probably only stocks seedlings suitable for winter growing locally right now too.

Ooooh! maybe forget the garden and go on holiday to the Maldives or somewhere.. not too bad at all here in New Zealand at the moment. Highs of 20°C and lows of around 10°C. Its raining here today but we do need it, especially in the garden. It has been a dry, windy spring. I'm looking forward to my summer garden taking off. I will post a pic or two when I get the chance.

cheers, Kiwi

Smile Better Today

Hi Kiwi,
"Better Today" The temps are completely different today, between 6-7 when leaving and returning from our jobs, no "windowscreen cleaning" this morning.

Raining as well here.

So you have fair temps out there, is that as bad as it gets??? or do you have any frosts, through the year??

Look forward to the pics, wait for a nice day though, so we can capture a "Glimpse" of the sun.
cheers stupo.

We get frosts too in winter and snow in the hills a few hundred meters elevation above town. In the south of the south island it will snow to sea level a few time a year during winter. From xmas on we will get highs around late 20's and even a few days reaching early 30's. A bit hot for my liking.

Sorry about getting a bit off track there Eby
It can't hurt to try some broccoli & cauli. Maybe try sowing some carrots too.
Bok Choi is cold tolerant, fast growing, and tastes great too.

Good luck,
Kiwi
