Default Gardening and the moon phase

Does anyone here garden around the moon phase? I have just bought a new gardening diary and it has tips on sowing different crops depending on what stage the moon is at. Sounds interesting and I think I'll experiment with it.. Just wondering if others here have tried it? cheers

I'm just embracing the concept of gardening by the moon. I think the idea of it makes a lot of sense and there's lots of evidence for it out there. I did sow some stuff last year at the right times and I must say it did seem to grow better. This year I'm going to conduct some experiments to see the difference between sowing at the right and wrong time for certain crops.

I just picked up the 2010 bio dynamic calendar to help me.

I`ve never tried it myself, but I believe there could be something in it.

Hello there,

I have been following the biodynamic lunar calender for two years now,( and organic) my mum and dad both laughed at me at the time I started.

However, the past two years crops have been wonderful, I have suffered virtually no pests ( a couple of slugs), and the crops were big. My parents who have been gardening for years are going to follow my lead this year because they were very suprised to say the least. I use an easy to follow wall planner from lunar organics, but there is also a biodynamic lunar sowing and planting calender by Maria Thun ( who I believe is the leading authority on this subject)

Anyway good luck

Default Gardening by the Moon

There is hardly a gardener in Italy who does not take note of the moon phase prior to planting plants or seeds.
So it must have considerable effect.
I only really started last year (late in the season) with my new patch but this year I will follow the moon phases including the time to put in the seed spuds.
Cheers

Is there any special reason for that? I mean Why specially the Italian gardeners do take note of moon phase as per mentioned in your post?

It's not just the Italians. The French are very into lunar gardening. I get a weekly gardening review that tells you what to do according to the lunar calendar. I haven't tried it myself as I'm always too impatient and want to rush into doing everything. But, I do think that it must have a lot of truth to it or there wouldn't be so many followers......

I hope it has nothing to do with being super stecious stuff of moon and stars...
just joking, I think yes the lunar effect is there and i think it has some reality thats why as per mentioned in above posts that people in Italy and France are accounting that into their calculations.

It would be useful if you could compare two beds, lunar vs. non-lunar.

Rudolf Steiner is also worth mentioning when discussing biodynamics: Rudolf Steiner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm trying my best to sow on the correct dates this year and may experiment with growing things on the wrong days and making comparisons. The concept of gardening by the moon has been around for a very long time.

It should be worth mentioning that as well as there being correct days for 'sowing' vegetables/fruit these correct days are also good for Harvesting them. There's been extensive testing on the storage of vegetables/fruit when harvested at different times.
