Default tomato leaves with black spots & shiny patches

Hi all

At the weekend I noticed half of my plants had started to show small black spots and pale yellow/brown patches as in pics 1-3. They seem to look like the leaves shown in this thread:

spotty tomato leaves

I had a go with a dilute epsom salts as suggested in the earlier posts but things seem to have gone worse with leaves now looking like pics 5-6. The yellowy patches seem quite shiny and the leaves appear to have lost strength. Does it look like I have bigger issues than low magnesium?

thanks for any advice you can give

jonny

Hi Johhy, welcome to our forum. In my opinion that looks likes sun scorch, especially on the first two images. Take a look at the imagines on this thread.

Can anyone help on whats eating my plants

If you get water on the leaves the droplets act like a magnifying glass which strengthens the sun making the scorch worse. Always ensure to water the plants from the base. The last two images had me wondering but I found this image of a tomato plant with scorch that has affected the whole of the centre of the leaves and as with yours the leaves seem to have lost their strength and are dropping downwards.

Hi Lesley

thanks for your welcome. Your idea probably ties in with what I did.
I sprayed the leaves on sunday afternoon when it was very overcast however it unexpectedly brightened up shortly afterwards. This probably led to the scorching. From now on I'll leave my 'mending' until early evening as I probably did more harm than good on this occassion.

I just hope that the plants recover enough. Is there anything I can/should do to help the plants or is it just a matter of hoping for the best?

thanks again

jonny

Hi Jonny, normally there is no need to worry about sun scorch on leaves - just take care not to wet the leaves when watering the plants and if necessary rig up some shading in the greenhouse during the summer. But, looking at the last two images I think I would give the plants a feed or two with an organic liquid seaweed feed which should give the plants a boost. You can buy the seaweed feed at garden centres.
