Default Outdoor Cucumber

Planted up an outdoor cucumber which I bought from a garden centre and I have it in my greenhouse until weather picks up but I have noticed a couple of days ago a patch which looks like chalk around the base of the plant on the compost, scraped this away twice but it has come back again, can someone explain what this is, as I have never come across it before, and I have grown cu's loads of times.

Wish I could help runnerbean as I also have white powder on my tomato compost. I am putting it down to over watering. My cucs are still in toilet roll inners.

I have just spoken to a gardening friend and he says its because the compost isn't sterilised before it is bagged up from source, mildews can occur in some bought composts. He using a steamer on his before planting up as the steam kills any spores or germs I will just take away the first few inches of compost and replace with new and see what happens, as the plant looks healthy enough. Sometimes I wonder with the expense of buying the seeds, the compost, all the different feeds and bug sprays, is it quicker and cheaper to buy organic vegetables!!!!

Wink mmmh!

mmm! I have a self feeding/watering seven tray propagator which constantly gives me the same problem with the seedlings (fungus growing) but as soon as I prick them out into larger pots (even with some of the said mentioned fungus attached) the problem seems to go away. Particularly once I put them outside to harden up.
Currently got 250 toms on the way, currently selling 10 per day - not paying paying the mortgage but helps with the rest of the grocery bills!
Cheers
Dickie
