Default Latest Photos

These are the latest photos of my vegetables, i know some of them are too close together but i am only learning , have made notes for next season. I bought Dr. D.G. Hessayon,s excellent book "The Expert Vegetable Notebook", so i won,t make the same mistakes next year.
Cabbages grew from 3 inch seedlings in only seven weeks, we have been eating them for 3 weeks now, the first thing i have ever eaten that i grew myself - fantastic, ate the first spuds and lettuce at the weekend and french beans are almost ready.
I hve mulched the french beans with grass cuttings (no herbicides were used on lawn) is that an OK thing to do ???
Salutations to All.
Best Regards - Hammer

Hi Hammer. Great going on the garden, and I would venture a guess that every gardener here learns something new every year so good job on that too. I use grass clippings to mulch around my veggies. As you said no herbicides were applied, it's a good way to get some organic matter into the soil. The mulch I put on first is already melted into the earth so I'm going over a second time. The one thing you have to watch out for is that you don't get the grass clippings too deep if you're putting them on your garden freshly cut. The green clipping can build up alot of heat if they're too deep. I forgot to spread out a pile that was next to one of my melon plants and the heat killed it over night , but I did have several more. I get alot of info from the University of Nebraska Extension Servise and they recomend no more than an inch of clippings at a time. After the first layer dries out you can add another so that's what I try too go by. Good luck on the garden

As you may see from my photos my neighbor has a Beech hedge between our properties, i cut back my side of this late last year and again in early Spring this year, did it in two stages as it had grown 9 feet into my garden and i did,nt want to be too severe on it in one go, it,s growing fine now, BUT is infected with white bugs, Aphids ? we,ve sprayed it twice in the last month but problem though lessened still persists, my question is are these pests a threat to my veg, if so what should i do ? I spryed all my veg twice with a two week interval using an organic pest repellant. Is that ok. should i do anything else ?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated,]
Thanks Husker, i only mulched with an inch of grass, so should be ok.
Regards Hammer

Hi Hammer, your veggies are looking great!! Whitefly aphids are a beech pest but rather than continually spraying your veggies cover the plants over with a fine insect mesh, that the whitefly can't get through to lay eggs. Then spray the hedge with washing up liquid diluted in water about one teaspoon to a pint of water every week, but not the anti-bacterial stuff or it might kill the hedge! As the whitefly are active you will need to keep checking that there aren't any whiteflies under the insect mesh or any eggs underneath the leaves of your veggies. If you can go around to your neighbours and spray the hedge from their side that would also help.

Betty, I am only planting Cauli as i harvest the Cabbages, so i only have a few at this stage, seedling are just out of the ground an inch, which is ok as we would,nt eat cauliflower in the Summer (i,m just wondering why that is ?)
