Hey,
Havnt grown chili plants before but bought these to have a go with and they arrived a few days ago. Bhut jolokia x 10 Jalapeno x 20 Scotch bonnet x 10 Was basically wondering how to start off really. What soil? fertiliser? where to start them off? etc. I have a small greenhouse with about 5 shelves but thats probably abit cold to start off in i thought. Would really appreciate any tips, as you guys seem to know what youre doing Thanks alot. x x |

I started mine off last year late March, I planted the seeds into a module seed tray with a clear plastic lid, you could just use a small plant pot though with a plastic bag or sandwich bag over the top. Keep them indoors as they need warm soil in order to germinate. When the seedling appear and have a few leaves take the plastic lid (or bag) off and let them grow a bit bigger, then plant on to bigger pots. You probably only want to end up with 2 plants of each variety - otherwise you'll end up with tonnes of chillies! You could either only plant a few seeds, or plant them all and weed out the weaker ones (or grow them all onto bigger pots and give some away as gifts). As for compost I just used seedling compost to start with and then a general potting compost and mine grew fine. When they were about 5 inches tall and the weather was getting warmer I moved them to my mini greenhouse (one of those 5 shelve types you have) and they grew like mad in there but I didn't pinch out the growing tip so they grew quite tall and leggy rather than bushy. Mine were getting attacked by earrwigs - they were munching the leaves so I ended up bring them indoors and they did great on my window sills. Some chilli varieties have a long growing season so it's a long time before you get any fruits and sometimes if the summer is short the fruits don't get chance to ripen (though we had some jalapenos that just turned red in the last few weeks).
Once they have fruit you are supposed to feed them with tomato feed, but as mine were indoors (and my tomato feed was outside) I just used water - would've probably got more chillies if I'd used the feed though. If you grow them in the greenhouse or indoors you might want to read up on forcng the flowers to pollinate (plant ****!!) as you might not get enough pollinating insects inside and so the flowers will just drop off and no fruit will grow. Have you read the whole of this Bhut Jolokia thread? there's some great tips and advice burried within. Stupo is great and has provided some great links. Have fun! Nicola |
