Default sweetcorn

ello all need some advise with my sweetcorn
well heres my situation ive got a small raised bed i made
5ftx6ftx2ft high
because i didnt know anything about these plants i brought 8 pots each with 2 small plants in.
well i've just found out that i should av disregarded the weaker of the 2.
& as you've proberly just gathered i did'nt.
so now i've got 16 plants the thing is i did'nt seperate niether, so each set of 2 plnts r growing out of the same 4inch patch.
the good side is every1 has flowered & has got atleast 1 cob on there stems growing most 2 & 1 looks like it's got 3.
well my question is there growing so tall there pushing the netting up 2 much so what i would like 2 know is can i cut the tops of the plants after where the top cob is growing & if so will it do any harm to the cobs.

Hi Steve, I never, ever, throw perfectly good plants away! The seed companies love us to sow two seeds in one pot and disregard one of the plants - that uses twice as much seed which is expensive. It's such a waste! So, I only sow one seed per pot or cell, but if you buy the young plants and there is more than one plant in a pot just carefully separate them when you plant them outside.

There is absolutely no need to net sweetcorn plants over so you can safely remove the net. As for planting too close together - well, a while ago I would have agreed with you until I saw Huskers fabulous sweetcorn cobs and just how close together he planted the sweetcorn. He has a 6'x3' raised bed with the same number of plants as yours. Take a look at this link which has a video on of his plants growing - the cobs really are fabulous!

Sweet Corn

BTW - in answer to your question, no, don't cut the top of the plants off.

Hi Steve, an easy way to post photo's is as thumbnails. If you have your photo's stored on your PC then it is really simple to post them as clickable thumbnail photo's! To do that, when you click on Post Reply scroll down the page and click on Manage Attachments. Click on 'Browse' which opens the files on your PC. Then click on the file containing your photo's, click on open, then click on your photo file and click on open. Then click on the photo you want and then click on upload. Click on browse again to upload another photo the same way. Then write your post, click on Submit Reply and your thumbnail photo's will appear on your post.
