I tend to pick my beets when they are still quite young and small as they taste better and are more succulent & juicy.

I would recommend making beetroot chutney. Search for the recipe on here. I've posted it already. It's to die for.

I planted my beets on the 13th April. I planted 2 vararities, Forono and another called Red Rube. The Red Rube beets were picked on the 13th July. As for the Forono, well I left them longer as they needed more time to produce as they aren't round like most beets, instead they are long if you get me! I picked the Forono on the 13th August.

Hope this helps.

To be honest I don't like beetroots except in vinegar The German girlfriend loves them and thats why I grow them, for her. She makes some weird and wonderful things with them but can't remember just now. I do know she boils them like spuds and eats them with butter and pepper I think! I will tell her about the chutney and find a few recipes on here, thanks!

They look brill. You may like the chutney if you like them pickled as it is similar tasting, only sweeter and tastier. Lovely on a cheese sandwich, nice with cream cheese too and cold meat. My beetroot isn't ready yet and every1 is shouting for the chutney.

Glad you liked them, the other half said they tasted great.

I am definetly going to find a recipe for the chutney and get her to make it for me, she does all the jams and chutneys! Now I am starved and could eat a cheese sarnie with beetroot chutney

Dont forget to eat the leaves -apparently the Romans introduced them to Britain and they grew them for the leaves alone -bit like beet spinach?

Pick the beetroot when they are golf ball size or allow them to grow a bit bigger. It's really up to you.

I made a delicious beetroot and apple chutney. Also cook the beetroot and put some cider vinegar on or honegar vinegar. Or in juices.

Why can't I post a photo of my beet ? Why has it got to be approved first ? This is the second time I have tried and been told this.
