Have planted some runner beans in my mini greenhouse and they are starting to shoot up. Half the plants look normal but the others have smaller, crinkly leaves - almost as if something has nibbled it but I don't think they have! They are still as green though but just an irregular shape. Do you think I should start again with these, as I still have time?
One other question please.... Built 2 raised beds last year, didn't use them in the winter, and am now about to start again. What should I mix in with the soil for nutrients, before I plant anything? We have a compost, with just grass clippings, is this any good or should I buy something from a DIY shop? Thank you for any help - there maybe more questions! I seem to have forgotten everything I learnt last year! |

Although it depends on what you are planting a couple of bags of decent well rotted manure dug in will work wonders, I did this last year (in the second year of having installed my linkaboard raised beds) and my runner bean crop quite literally doubled in size. I believe this also work well for most root vegetables.
With regards to the runner beans, I have sown three packets (for selling on) this year and all of the initial leaves have been crinkly as well, not sure if this is due to the unusually dry weather. That said they have all grown on strong when planted and a lot of people I've sold them to have said they are doing well. So stick with them, but as a back up just set some more going

They sound alright. Though check the underside of the leaves to see if anything is trying to eat them.
To improve your soil - ad grass clippings, compost and manure or chicken pellets from the garden centre.
