peas and mangetout

i think i have spotted the differance between peas and mangetout before they grow fruit, i think peas have a serated edge at one end of the leaves and mangetout have round leaves does any one know if this is true????

Hi Shaun. I know that when my peas first start to leaf out the edges are a bit rough but when I looked at them today the leaf edges are starting to smooth out. I have to show my ignorance and say I'm not sure what mangetout is, one of those thing we may have a different name for over here . Guess I'd better look it up on the net.

Hi Shaun,

You're wrong there I'm afraid, they look just about the same until your pods start coming up. The serrated edge you mention is something eating your pea plants - I have exactly the same thing happening to mine up at the allotment while the leaves on my peas at home are all perfectly rounded. Give them a spray (unless you're going organic) and put up a mesh around them and the new leaves won't have these serrated edges.
