Question onions/shallots

help have been reading some bks about veg growing and they tell me to tie the tops of my onions over to make the onions grow bigger. is this correct and when should i do it. how big should the tops of the onions be before i do this.

Claire,
I have heard of people doing this, but as far as i know it was only done when the leaves turned yellow, i.e. the Onions were nearly ready to Harvest or they are Onions for Showing..If you did this when the leaves are still green you would be preventing any further growth, i,m no expert but it makes sense.

I've never heard that. But it could be true. When the tops fall over they usually stop growing.
