dying squash

My squash plants are failing suddenly i pulled one up and there are white tiny wiggly worm like bugs all over the roots...... This happened to all of them practically overnight...i am very miffed. I had a look on the net and all i could find was reference to vine borer pest but it doesnt fit the appearance of the bugs i have got? any ideas? Oh and one of my melon plant is looking as if its going the same way.......
