Default What now for Strawberries?

My first year of growing strawberries (we bought them as small plants from the garden centre in April).

We have had a good crop and I think we are seeing the last few strawberries this week. I have noticed that the plants are throwing out runners now. I gather I can make new plants from these.. what is the best way to do it?

And what of the original plants, should I just leave them to do their own thing? Do they die right down over winter?

Thanks

Jo

place the runners into pots so they can root while attached to the mother plant, then remove and grow on for next year.

the existing plants should be fine for another year or two, just give them a feed once the fruit has gone, they are herbaceous perennials but they don't last forever. Ideally you would want to change the plants and their location every few years.

Ok, thanks. Do you mean, sinking pots into the ground near the 'mother' plants? Where will the roots come from - the end of the runner where the leaves are developing? (The leaves are currently tightly rolled up...)
