As far as I know they don't flower. You dig them up like potatoes and use the tubers.

I too have grown Jeruselem Artichokes and mine haven't flowered this year or last. They are related to sunflowers but yes you eat the tubers. Beware tho they contain a carbohydrate that gives you cronic flatulence. They are also know are fartichokes!

I've grown 4 containers (60litre compost bags) of them. They haven't flowered either, but I'm really looking forward to the harvest! My wife and I tend to eat them alone and then giggle quite a lot for the rest of the evening!

After the discussion I went to look at my artichokes and they are flowering!
I got my tubers from Thompson & Morgan and as usual they were delivered at just the right moment - can't fault the guys there! I must be patient though. I so want to harvest some but I know if you dont let the plant die off they are all slimey as the starch hasn't formed properly. Jess |

Mine are not flowering yet - to be honest I completely forgot what they were until I was reading this post and realised that this is what I planted there, ooops, but according to my book you do have to wait until the foliage dies back like Jess said.
For the flatulence problem: spice it with a bit (it is a strong spice so take care!!) asafoetida, I do the same with beans - really helps! Although my other half likes to take a bath when he has gassy digestive problems as he thinks it is hilarious to see the bubbles (secretly I do think it is funny but would NEVER admit, lol). |
