Default parsnips - club root?

decided to pick a parsnip yesterday. Great difficulty getting it up. Had to dig it up and discovered loads of roots which was the problem. Do parsnips get club root and is it afe to eat? thanks

It's the natural rooting system of all parsnips, just trim them off.(parsnips don't get club root, only members of the cabbage family,(brassicas).

if it's a mass of small roots rather than one main tap with side shoots then the root has been damaged at some point. sow directly in their growing possitions, remove any big stones, fork and rake over the bed really well and don't add manure.

Guess that's where I went wrong. last year had problems with them germinating so this year sowed them in paper pots in greenhouse and then transplanted them. Still will know now for next year.

My soil is derived from boulder clay and is full of stones so I have difficulty growing snips and carrots. I now grow them all in containers with excellent results.

The pic shows the contents of one black flower bucket.
