There are just so many varieties of seed potatoes on the market these days, its hard to know which one is best.
I remember as a lad we always used to plant dear old Pentland Javelin and reliable Desiree. I'm wondering if I should stick with what I know or try a new first early & maincrop? Any suggestions on which varieties are the best? A heavy crop is my main objective. |

JB is quite right. What grows well in my soil might be poor in yours. I always try at least two new varieties each year but with earlies I always go for taste rather than yield and Lady Christl is my favourite. For second earlies/maincrops then Kestrel, Wilja, Estima should give good yields.

Always grow Red duke of york - seems to do well in our soil. Also growing Potato 'Mayan Gold' a nice looking golden colour and salad blue a pretty purple one because the look so pretty!!

Maris Piper are a very good yielding main crop in the right conditions (field scale we got 28 tons per acre in 2011) but in a dry year they will suffer badly from scab. If you can find them Kondor are a very good maincrop that store well. I have also grown Saxon second earlies and kept them right through till the following March, another high yielding variety. If you want a good baking or chipping variety try Pentland Dell maincrop, they have a good yield potential and can come to a very large size.
