Default Damson vodka

I have three damson trees in the garden and there's a limit to the jars of damson jam you can give away so an elderly neighbour (and good gardener) suggested the following
1 pint Vodka (as cheap as you can find)
1 pint Damsons (prick holes with cocktail stick)
6 ozs sugar.
Put all together in large bottle or demijohn - shake occasionally - by Xmas (assuming you do the above in Sept) strain through sieve and decant into bottles and ENJOY

I've just polished off the last of the sloe vodka I made three years ago. *hic* It's so much nicer than sloe gin. *hic*

G*d that takes me back! We used to live in the Lake District and you couldn't give damsons away! I tried making wine once and it turned out like thin jam! Couldn't get any sloes last year, but the blossom this spring looks as tho we will get plenty this time.

Thanks for that. I'm gonna try it with the glut of plums I'm getting this year. I presume the bottle should be kept in a cool and dark place?
Does it work with any fruit?

Thumbs up not sure

Not sure on the cool and dark place, but might be an idea to avoid any possible second fermentation (Not sure if this could occur with a spirit, but having woken up as a child thinking I was bleeding from my stomach only to find my fathers red wine had carried on fermenting, blown the cork out of the bottle in the loft and then run down the light and dripped the dark red wine onto my bed....I was somewhat traumatised at the age of 12 by the whole experience)
That said I would highly recommend putting a wide variety of 'berry' fruits in with a litre of rum (You will need another air tight container, not the rum bottle itself) in January. By the next Christmas this will result in as fantastic tasting drink on it's own, Or a mind blowing addition when poured over heavy desert such as ice cream or trifle - enjoy!
