Not wanting to sound nieve but how do you grow mushrooms??

My first memories of getting a job after school was on my late grandfather-in-laws nursery. He had several mushroom sheds, well they were more lofts really. He apparently made a fortune during war years growing mushrooms and sending them up to London........ I would love to recreate those old sheds, alas I don't have the room here....will have to make do with growing some in a small way. Would be glad of some advise where to buy the spawn and do you still grow them in the dark?
