Default Attracting the Birds and Bees

My collegue at work has a garden thats completely grass free being paved and containing two fir trees. He wants to attract wildlife, into his garden, and even though he puts food out for the birds, he seldom sees any. W hat plants can he grow in containers to attract wild life into his garden, he wants to do his bit for the environment. Any ideas, most welcome. Preferably perennials and plants that are easy to maintain.

to attract butterflys and moths to you garden plant a buddliea in a tub ornamental grasses in tubs are super for mothsinstead of peanuts try black sunflower seeds and put some in trays above the ground away from cats not all birds like to feed from nets of fancy feeders

I assume the bloke is going to put in a watering system? 'Cause he can be as minimalist as he likes but if he isn't going to water he hasn't a hope!

Large pots, tubs and planters with an array of single blooms and nectar rich flowers plus some form of water for the wildlife to drink/swim in.

I recommend he reads two books - The container Gardener by Rupert Golby and Rock & Water garden expert by Dr. D.G. Hessayon.

That should give him somewhere to start.
