Default wildlife garden in the shade?

Hello i have a narrow fairly long garden with quite a few trees around. there is a little patch in the middle where the old owners had a greenhouse. this part of the garden is fairly overgrown and shaded by the big conifers either side. we get lots of birds in our garden and i imagine there are lots of insects around the patch (as there is lots of dead wood and stuff) but the patch itself is fairly baron. i would like to encourage more wildlife and really make the most of this part of the garden. does anyone have any suggestions? it is fairly sheltered and shady and the soil isn't great. quite alkaline and heavy - if that means anything?. i would really appreciate any advice as i am new to all this and am rapidly getting confused! thankyou.

Hi bonbon, I see your post is a few days old and no replys. Sorry about that.

If you are still about, let me know.

It seems ok as it is for wildlife, tho there is always something you can do.

The old log pile is the easiest first job.

Hi,
I have recently created a small woodland area in a shady part of my garden. A small area of water is a must, even a washing up bowl sunk into the ground (with rocks stacked in so nothing that falls in can drown). Rotted branches/logs, stones, barkchippings are all good.
I researched what plants like shade and there is a surprising amount of really stunning plants that thrive there. I planted some oak trees and really recommend planting a hawthorn tree. They are SO beneficial for nature.
It won't take much effort to improve your soil too.
